Livestock: how do I record milk production and read its report?

Milk is recorded twice a day, and it tells you which cow earns her feed and which does not.

Recording milk

1. Open Livestock → Milk Production — Figure 1.
2. Add a record for each milking: the animal, the date, the session (morning or evening) and the quantity in litres.
3. You can record per animal or per shed, depending on the size of your herd.

The milk report

From Reports → Milk — Figure 2 — you see daily production, the average litres per head and its trend over the period, filtered by farm and shed.

Notes

• A sudden drop in one cow’s yield is a health warning before it is a management issue; check her health record.
• Compare average litres per head against feed cost per head; that is the number that judges the herd.
• Do not record milk once at the end of the day from memory; an estimate hides the problem instead of revealing it.
